# Add your banner's purposes

Before your banner can ask visitors anything, it needs purposes. A purpose is the reason you use a cookie, written in words a visitor understands, such as measuring visits or showing ads.

## Where purposes live

Your website's purposes are in **Processing**, on the **Purposes** tab. Most websites need three: **Analytics**, **Functional** and **Marketing**. Necessary cookies don't need a purpose, because they're always on.

## Write or check a purpose

### 1. Open a purpose

Open **Processing**, then the **Purposes** tab, and select a purpose to open it. To add one, select **New purpose**. You can start blank or from a template.

### 2. Give it a short name and an honest description

Visitors read exactly this name and description on your banner, so keep them simple and true to what the cookies do. The sections in between are for your own records.

### 3. Check how it's asked

For a cookie purpose, the legal ground is consent. Check the category matches, for example **Analytics** for analytics cookies, and that **Off until the visitor agrees** is ticked. That keeps the purpose off until a visitor says yes.

If your website uses Google Analytics or Google Ads, tick the Google consent types this purpose covers, such as `analytics_storage`. Google's tags then follow each visitor's choice.

### 4. Save and publish

Select **Save draft**, then **Review and publish**. Your banner can only ask about published purposes.

## Link your cookies to purposes

Each cookie belongs to one purpose. Open a cookie on the **Cookies** page to see which. When you pick a category for a cookie, ComplyZero links it to your purpose for that category. If you sorted your cookies before you had purposes, move them to their category again and they'll link.

> **One purpose, every channel**
> The same purposes also work for your consent forms and your Preference Centre, so a person's choice means the same thing everywhere they meet you.

## Video transcript

Before your banner can ask visitors anything, it needs purposes. A purpose is the reason you use a cookie, in words a visitor understands. They live in Processing, on the Purposes tab. Here there are three: Analytics, Functional and Marketing. Let me open Analytics. There's a short name, and a description of what it actually does. Your visitors read exactly this on the banner, so keep it honest and simple. The sections in between are for your own records. The legal ground is consent, and the category is Analytics. "Off until the visitor agrees" is ticked, which is what you want for analytics. And since the shop uses Google Analytics, analytics_storage is ticked too, so Google's tags follow the visitor's choice. When you change something, Save draft, then Review and publish. To add another one, select New purpose. You can start blank, or from a template. Necessary cookies don't need a purpose, by the way. They're always on. Each cookie is linked to its purpose. You can see it when you open a cookie on the Cookies page. When you pick a category, ComplyZero links the cookie to your purpose for it. If you sorted your cookies before you had purposes, just move them to their category again, and they'll link.
